7/12/103 Months later...
Well, 3 months have cruised by and all of a sudden it's the middle of the summer. I suppose the larger parts of my time have been taken up by ultimate, the basement and finding time between that to see Marie.
Ultimate... let's see I was told I was captain of Drag'n Thrust this year. I am cool with it. I never NEVER did this much work for the Knox team though (shhh don't tell). But I also know a lot more about ultimate, and how to lead a group of people so that's good. Alicia and Dave are captaining with me, so it's not like I am alone. We have to strike a delicate balance though, because of our personalities. We make a good team though. That being said we had the most talent I've ever seen at a try-out (for a mixed team). We had 70 people who could all legitimately play ultimate. It actually might mean we make another team from the twin cities which would be awesome. After the "totally fun" experience that is cutting great players from the team, we still have a bunch to do in organizing the team and making us the best team we can be. With OTP not playing this year, and OTP+CLX earning us 3 bids to nationals this year, we have a pretty good shot at Natties, but nothing is written in stone. New team from Michigan (Overhaul) and those crazy Chicagoans always put together a team... Oh yeah... and that World Champion team CLX will probably show up at Regionals...
Basement... I don't know where I left off, but after my dad helped me drywall the ceiling and most of the walls in the family room area, I was left all by my onesies with the rest of the family room, bedroom and bathroom. I got all the materials in the house now, and I am most of the way done with the bedroom and all done with the family room... so things are coming along, but way slower than I would have liked.
Marie and I are planning a cruise to Alaska first week in August which should prove to be AMAZING. Nothing like BOBman going to Turkey or Cooper out in China and wherever else he went. But I feel adventurous
That's all I've really got now I think... 3 month recaps are a little more high-level

- How people spend their time on the internet - pretty pictures
- Check out the art this guy made on the beach! Where do you find a beach to do that? How do you really figure out the scale of things?! incredible.
- SLOTH!
- Seriously, how much time do you think this thing took? Amazing! General Grievous.
- Ever wonder what Ninja's do in this modern age?
- New video game trailers: Force Unleashed 2, Zelda, Golden Eye!? Hell. Yes.
- One problem with the internet and letting just any old person review a movie is people think they are cool if they are the only one that hated a great movie...Pixar can do no wrong.
- I don't know about you, but technology from 2000 doesn't seem that dated... until you see this.
- There has to be some eating contest that includes this thing... right?
- This is like real Davinci Code / National Treasure stuff. Amazing. These people that revolutionized the things we think of as disciplines were just a different breed... so smart.
- This is funnier because I make fun of MS all day and write Java... but I think it's funny if you don't too

- I wondered why Make-A-Wish kids didn't come up with something cool... turns out they do.
- I don't know why I am propagating this kind of a link... But I actually think it's going to happen. Apple has a lot to gain by going with multiple carriers.
- I would buy this shirt for my kid.
- Ever wonder why plane tickets cost what they do? Thank you investigative reporters from crack, for finally shedding some light on it.
- Don't get enough iPhone with your iPad, iPhone, iTouch and iMac at home? Now you can feel like you're using technology when you grab a glass of milk.
- Nature is the coolest... Seeing magnetic fields?! SWEET.

Got that off my plate

3/22/10Hmmm 12 blog posts a year...
That seems totally maintainable until I realize that it's been over a month since my last one and that makes me late... damn
Well in the last month a few things have gone on... let's see. My friend convinced me to run in a 5k... that's not very far and I "plan" to run a mile a day anyway, but still running sucks. Maybe it'll be nicer to run with someone; and maybe someday Nova will stop pulling me the first half mile and I won't have to pull her the second half.
Marie and I got a membership to the science museum. That place is just tons of fun. Learning is cool. Though I was a little sad that they didn't have the new name for the 112th element up yet a month after it was named... bad science museum bad. We also got to see the dead sea scrolls which was absolutely fantastic. What a cool experience to get to see writings that old. I have also decided we've been reading Hebrew wrong, they don't write right to left, the translators and whomever just had the pages upside down.
My dad came and visited for a week to help drywall the basement. Wow what a project that is. I definitely underestimated both time and effort on that one. In a week together we got most of the interior walls, and the ceiling completely. We didn't make any serious mistakes in measure where holes ended up in the wrong place by some miracle. Also we only broke one board (fell on my dad's head... ouch, right on the little knob on top of baseball caps) and we reused most of the board anyway! I still have a lot to do to get the exterior walls in, and frame in one more door (also no looking forward to cutting that door out). Playing with tools and learning how to do all that stuff was tons of fun though. Not to mention getting to hang out with my dad.
Side accomplishment: My dad actually finally listened to me and started appreciating some Weird Al
All it took was listening to "Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" 500 times.
Last bit of big news we switched from Qwest DSL to Comcast Cable internet. It was because of a promotion that for the next year internet is cheaper and way faster. Hurray for being able to watch streaming videos all the way through! Also the promotion got us a land-line, so whenever we get handsets to use the land line I will email and tell you phone number. Fringe benefit here: I set up my sweet firewall, so now I have our VPN set up and a new domain for our computers
That's the big news... I wired the basement to have surround sound in place, not totally sure how i am going to vent my component closet or cover it with a door... but I'll figure something out eventually.

2/17/10Whew! What a day...
I feel like that day took 24 * 5 hours!
Well what has been going on lately? I guess mostly I have been overwhelmed with stupid side web development... Mostly I have found that GoDaddy windows shared web hosting + WordPress do not go well together. In general never ever ever EVER use Windows web hosting, just not worth the pain and agony.
I also started re-making set for Marie in java. I have a pretty decent version going, but I run into so many repaint issues where I just get weird artifacts on the screen and I didn't wander far from tutorials; so I frequently wonder what is going on. But it looks way better than the previous version I made her; works a ton better. At some point maybe I'll post it.
My birthday was pretty fun, had a few people over to watch House and The Office and of course made deep dish pizza
. Marie made me a sweet hand warmer (because she couldn't find a Bears one...) she "felted" it but it shrunk way more than it was supposed to and just a tiny too much so my left hand doesn't fit in. She's going to fix it or redo it or something. But either way, totally awesome. She bought a bears logo and has little velcro things on there to stick it on. Did I mention it's reversible?! Sweet!
Geoff and I have started going climbing (like once a month...) but it was enough to make buying my own harness worth while. Found a great deal on SteepAndCheap.com for a harness, chalk bag and chalk. So this past weekend we went climbing and I actually got to use it all. Chalk makes a huge difference. Not to mention how cool I felt with my cool harness and chalk bag. I felt like a pro... other than not being able to actually get up the wall.
Marie and I are always about a day behind on LOST but that show is really fun to watch. They've created such a mysterious setting; it's really fun to speculate and wonder what will happen. I doubt the conclusion will be as epic as my mind makes it out to be. That's not enough to keep me from watching it though.
I guess the last bit of news is that the basement finally has heat and electrical down there. My dad is coming in a few weeks and staying for a whole week (or so) and we'll hopefully get all the drywall in. That will make me feel really good. Then we just have to throw some flooring down and boom-city we'll double the squar footage in the house! We will probably have to cut some corners while he's here and not finish the bathroom or the bedroom closet down there. But if we just get the living area down there done I will be ecstatic.

1/13/10just keep your mouth shut, Alex...
Sometimes I forget the one lesson I really should have learned in school: KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). So I am going to try very hard to do that, whenever I can. When someone making decisions for me decides to make it complicated for stupid old me, I will just keep my world as simple as possible as to not strain my poor little brain.
Well I haven't updated since Christmas, so I should probably update, eh?
Christmas was a lot of fun. but as it has been lately it was a lot all at once. We drove down to Chicago the 23rd right through the middle of the big storm. Marie's dad said he was watching the storm and tracking about where we must have been the whole time and wondering what we were thinking (really wondering what I was thinking, because Marie wanted no part i think). The roads got really bad around Wisconson Dells, and we started to slow down to < 30mph so we stopped at a Motel 6 (always pet friendly) and spent the night, and drove the rest of the way in the morning.
Got to spend time with my mom, my dad, Vinny and Molly and the rest of the family, so that was great. Got a choice present from my cousin kyle... a screen printed suggestively posed Skeletor laying on Cringer made into a "bear-skin rug". You just can't un-see that...
Anyway then Christmas day we drove back to Minnesota, spent the night with Marie's parents family, then the next day we went to another holiday shin-dig with more of Marie's relatives.
New years was pretty uneventful. We went on our second annual candle-lit trail walk through Fort Snelling National Park with Nova, Alyssa and Adam which was fun but very cold. We were substantially better equipped to handle the cold this year though.
And now the very few links I have for you (sorry I haven't really been looking at the internet the last few months...)

I didn't actually think December got busy until I realized it was almost Christmas... goodness gracious.
Anyway, I have a bunch I should probably write about, but for now you get the really quick summary:
We saw Avatar in 3D IMAX, and man was it worth it. It wasn't a great movie really, but the effects and 3D and just the scope of the film was incredible.
We will be in Chicago for a few days (probably just 2) if we get out of town. Not really sure how that's going to go... But we are packed up and ready to go. We'll see if the freezing rain/snow is going to stay out of our way.
We are doing fine and Nova is doing great.
That's your quick recap

11/6/09One Crazy Friday
First off, I have a bunch of links, but I won't be posting them, because they are all open at work, and not at home (which is thankfully where I am at 9:40pm on a Friday).
Well we had one crazy day today. Marie had today off, so I took it off in hopes to get some things done around the house that were in desperate need (because that's the state it had to be in for us to pay attention
Marie started taping up the house (she was painting today), and got started on finishing up some free-lance website I really should have been finished with but the job just keeps going (really should be charging this one by the hour...).
Then we got to our yard work. Raked the whole backyard. Then Marie's mom showed up, and they got going on actually painting. I continued in the yard with mowing.
Then the electrician showed up (while Marie and her mom were out at Home Depot getting supplies). He gave us a quote on all the electrical work that needs done in the basement. Oh man. So that includes suiting up the bedroom with smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, fan box, lights, outlets and all that good stuff, recessed lights for the family room and "office" as well as an extra crappy light for the laundry room, AND vanity lights in the bathroom down there as well as a fan/light. All and all it's getting us pretty excited about the state of our basement. Man is it going to be expensive though. $3,500 for just the electrical... we still need heating down there and flooring, not to mention the stuff we just have to buy the hardware for and do ourselves: drywall, drop ceiling. We're not jumping on his estimate right now, a guy is coming tuesday and someone else was supposed to come today, but I guess they blew us off.
Then Marie came home and she and her mom painted a wall blue, plus painted over hall (with nice paint that won't scuff and crap up so easily, and not be able to clean).

In one of my trips to the car, I realized there was oil leaking all over the place... awesome. So thankfully I have the day off, drop the car off at the shop. Apparently the little guy that holds in the oil pan was all messed up and it got replaced... ugh, there goes $80. But at least now my car is in tip top shape.
Marie's dad came over at some point, so he helped me tie up the loose ends in the basement. Now the wall down there is finished (framed) and has all the studs in.
On top of that I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my server (SO NICE). That is quite the extravaganza too... hopefully I can get everything in my server in place and my backup plan in place, because I now have a 1TB drive just for backing up stuff. YAY.
Have a great weekend kids!

10/27/09Halloween
So I was over at the Berrys' blog and they put up some Halloween pictures and talked about their new kitty Vash, so I figured I could copy them.
First I have to mention that I commented on their blog about their cute new kitty Vash and how he has a habit of attacking feet and check out the captcha that came up:

it says "ow vash" right in there. I thought that was pretty funny. BTW it helps to be dyslexic when finding these things.
So anyway Sunday we went over to Marie's parents and did some pumpkin carving. Check out our pumpkins, Marie ha the Asian vampire looking one and i have the wolf howling at the moon. Marie's was REALLY hard to cut into, it had been frozen and just had a really thick skin.

Well, not only did Geoff start giving me crap about not updating, he then stopped bugging me about it... I must really be late on these things. I had to have an actual conversation with him at lunch the other day. AWKWARD
First off it was great to see everyone I got to see this weekend! Yay seeing friends!
Well what has happened? Ultimate has come to an abrupt end... this season seemed to go by really quickly. It doesn't help that we did not make it to nationals, but to be honest One Trick Pony just out-played us. I think we have better disc skills in general (they have a few studs, don't get me wrong teams that good always do), but they are in much better shape, worked together WAY better and had a serious size advantage. So we will sit back and let them and CLX earn 3 bids to nationals next year. I really wish CLX the best of luck. When they turn it on they are as close to unstoppable as I have ever seen an ultimate team. Of course they have the ability to poop-the-bed like the rest of us (though they tend to do that on Saturdays of tournaments they don't care about...) In any case I hope CLX and One Trick Pony the best of luck. They are both excellent teams.
Well I am sorry to say that my child-hood kitty (really it's Molly's child-hood kitty) is going to be put down today
. I kind of thought I'd be more broken up, Elmo was a good kitty. I don't remember when we got him, but I am going to say he is edging on 20 years old.
I guess that's all I have for now... nothing else is going on. The first mn snow fall was this weekend, missed that. But don't you worry it snowed this morning (and all day) for all that commuting too. Here is our porch this morning.
